The production and applications of Methyl Silicone Oil (Polydimethylsiloxane)

Wed Jun 27 10:02:53 CST 2018

Methyl silicone oil is the earliest commercially available silicone polymer. Because of its excellent anti-oxidation, anti-shear, low surface tension, hydrophobic, defoaming and other properties are widely used in electrical, mechanical, paint, medicine and other national economic departments.

In the production of methyl silicone oil, the catalyst decomposes to generate a gas with a pungent odor. These gases are partially miscible in the system, making the silicone oil odor and the application limited. Therefore, the odor should be eliminated during the production of methyl silicone oil.

Methyl silicone oil production process in a reactor, the entire production process including the copolymerization reaction process, pumping low-breaking boiling process, the insulation process and the finished product cooling and cooling process are all low-boiling gas generation, through the condenser (circulating water, The condensing temperature is normal temperature. After condensation, the non-condensing gas is led to the activated carbon absorption device and discharged at a height of 15m from the exhaust cylinder.

Methyl silicone oils of different viscosities will be mixed with each other. Due to the low lightning of the low viscosity silicone oil, the lightning of the blended methyl silicone oil may be reduced. The chemical properties of methyl silicone oil are relatively stable, but the viscosity changes when it is exposed to strong acids, strong alkalis, or metal aluminum, tin, etc. at high temperatures.

Experiments have shown that using a program-controlled temperature method between 90-120°C and dropping to a temperature below 140°C after dehydration, and introducing a dry air bubbling method, a colorless, odor-free and qualified methyl silicone oil can be obtained. The average conversion rate has increased from 65% to more than 80%. (Source: Global Silicone Network)
