How to Make Stone Veneer Molds

Wed Feb 19 09:29:53 CST 2014

Apply stone veneer to any surface, creating the look and feel of stone without the structural or foundational modifications required to install actual stones. While thousands of ready-made stone veneer molds are available, there may be occasions when you want to install something unique, requiring an entirely new mold. Creating a stone veneer mold is a simple project, as long as you pay careful attention to the mold-making steps involved.

Instructions

1. Arrange the stones as needed. Most veneers are created so that the pattern of the veneer can be applied multiple times, with the edges blending in to create a continuous stone surface.

2. Create a wood frame to hold the stones while the mold is made around them. The wood frame should be large enough to surround the stones, rise above the height of the stones ¼ inch, and provide an additional 1 inch for the mold edges. Nail the frame together, and seal the seams.

3. Seal the stones with a stone sealant used on stone floors and concrete. Spray the stones with a release agent.

4. Use an epoxy glue to secure the stones together into a single mass. Allow the glue to dry completely.

5. Place the stones into a bed of clay spread into your wooden frame, leaving the 2 inches that will form the front of your veneer uncovered.

6. Mix the silicone rubber mix according to the manufacturer's instructions and pour onto the stones, covering them completely.

7. Allow the rubber to cure overnight to a solid form, and remove the rubber veneer mold from the stones.
