How to Make a Concrete Mold

Mon Nov 18 13:41:29 CST 2013

Making a mold for concrete is simple. There are numerous products on the market that can be applied to an object to create a mold. Rubber substances are favored because they are flexible and easy to make. Concrete is poured into a pre-made mold, and whatever object you are trying to recreate will appear when the concrete dries. Some molds can be made using one side of the object but some require making a mold of both sides. Either way, read through the following steps to learn how to create a mold so you can turn your favorite item into concrete.

Instructions

1 Cut a piece of 1/4 inch gutta percha to size. This product is rubber like, flexible and easy to maneuver.

2 Soak the gutta percha in NAPHTHA until it swells. This product is a flammable liquid mixture of hydrocardons. Remove the sheet from the mixture and soak it in hot water.

3 Apply the wet and mushy gutta percha onto the surface of an object you would like to create a concrete mold of. For the sake of this article, let's use a vase. Press the rag like material onto the surface of the vase firm, yet slowly.

4 Press the rubber hard into all the cavities. The rubber must be formed around the vase entirely so it resembles the vase exactly when you are finished.

5 Pour a mixed plaster over the top of your rubber mold. The plaster will dry quickly, helping your rubber mold keep its shape until it dries.

6 Remove the plaster from the rubber, then remove the rubber from the vase. The rubber mold can now be used to make a concrete vase.
